USA No Longer #1?

Everyone knows about the space race. Between 1957 and 1975 two world superpowers, the Soviet Union and the United States, competed for supremacy in space exploration. This rivalry lead to unprecedented leaps in technology and the way it was utilized in society. With the recent budget cuts in NASA, along with the retirement of its long-used space shuttle, the space frontier is once again up for grabs. NASA is currently dependent on other countries for space travel. American crews have to pay for room aboard Chinese and Russian apace rockets to reach space. This is a striking contrast to the space-race era in the late twentieth century, where the US dominated most aspects of space travel. Now the US is forced to contribute to the global economy for space travel, suggesting that we are no longer top dog in space endeavors.
